PARISH HALL RENOVATION PROJECT

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL CHURCH

The Story of a Toronto Church

“Aiming to build a community spirit”

FR LANCELOT MINEHAN

FIRST PASTOR OF SVP

1914-1931

In 1916, Fr Minehan purposely built our basement above ground. It would serve as our church until World War I ended. When he finally finished the church in September 1923, Fr Minehan opened the new parish hall, built from stone, to all who understood the value of true community.Because it first served as the church, our parish hall had street access and windows. The hall met the needs of that time.

MSGR. KIRBY

SECOND PASTOR OF SVP

1931-1968

Our second pastor, Monsignor Kirby, built on the foundation laid by Fr Minehan. While Fr Kirby was pastor, 45-50 young men from St. Vincent de Paul became priests. At one point, 26 men were studying for the priesthood at the same time in various seminaries. But St. Vincent’s was famous not only for its many vocations. The parish hall was the site of a vast and varied array of activities. Full of faith and fun, the people of St. Vincent’s ("the grandest people in the world," Fr Kirby said) used the hall as a centre of social and religious life for the parish and the neighbourhood.Msgr. Kirby was so beloved that when the hall was redesigned in 1986, it was named after him.
